  • See the plans for Shoreham Harbour at Pond Rd: 10 Nov-22nd December

Shoreham Harbour Regeneration Partnership JAAP - consultation announcement: An ambitious 15-year plan for the renaissance of Shoreham Harbour has been published which could see 1,400 riverside homes built and hundreds of jobs created. The docklands revival plan could provide a much-needed boost for the area, transforming it into a vibrant, thriving neighbourhood. Restaurants, shops, office space and cycle ways are also planned together with a new multi-million pound flood defence scheme. It is one of the biggest regeneration projects across the south east. Adur District Council leader Neil Parkin claimed the proposals could lead to a stunning revival for the area, saying: “This has taken five years of hard work but I think it has been worth it.” “It sets out a blueprint for the Harbour which will transform it into a destination of choice providing quality homes, jobs and a fantastic waterside environment for everyone.” “The joint efforts alongside the other councils toward making this ambitious project sustainable will have a big impact on improving the entire area for the wider community.” Among the proposals in the 120 page blueprint are: New waterfront walking/cycling route from Shoreham to Kingston Beach. 1,400 new homes, including affordable housing. 23,500 sqm new employment floorspace, including offices. Green corridor alongside A259 - improving environment, air quality, reducing noise pollution. District heat network - providing affordable, low carbon heat. Port operations will be concentrated in the eastern end of the harbour, freeing land for redevelopment. This scheme is set to repurpose this underused as an integral part of the revitalisation of the area. Emphasis has also been placed on enhancing the waterfront's natural appeal as a watersport destination with big plans to create a safe place to get active on the River Adur. Bob Lanzer, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Infrastructure, said: “This is an exciting plan which will bring about long-term regeneration and support economic growth on the West Sussex coast for existing and new residents, ports users, and visitors alike.” “It will help to maintain capacity for transporting minerals alongside redevelopment and investment in transport and other community infrastructure.” Cllr Julie Cattell, lead member for planning at Brighton & Hove City Council, said: “This regeneration scheme will see the transformation of Shoreham Harbour by creating a vibrant, exciting hub for this popular but all too often neglected area.” “The scheme will also bring much-needed jobs, housing and office space to Shoreham, and shows what can be achieved when different local authorities work in partnership.” The plans will be available for public view from 10th November to 22nd December 2017 with an invitation for comments on its overall legal compliance. Both hard copies and digitised documents will be available during these dates at the Shoreham Centre in Pond Road, Hove Town Hall, Norton Road and Bartholomew House in Brighton as well as libraries across the area. How will this affect Shoreham Beach? + View Large Image + Another 1,400 homeowners will be gazing across the river and wanting to come and visit 'their' beach. We need to do all we can to ensure they come by bike / foot / bus or low-emission shared cars whenever if possible - rather than clogging up roads in private cars. The proposed new cafe could hire all the watersport equipment and provide changing rooms, meaning there's no need to travel by van. Could this pave the way for a small ferry crossing?... and long term... maybe even another footbridge on the eastern end of The Beach. Many locals have mentioned the need for a decent public slipway. The Shoreham Slipways Group have proposed a design for Humphrey's Gap which accommodates the riverside path. At this stage, it is just a concept - it has not (yet?) been incorporated into the official scheme. The Harbour Regeneration project is not within the designated neighbourhood plan area, but will affect all Shoreham Beach residents in some way. You are invited to comment on the legal compliance of the plans from 10th November to 22nd December 2017 at the Shoreham Centre in Pond Road as well as libraries across the area. #flooddefences #employment #housing #heritage #survey #river #cycling

Why it is important: The Neighbourhood Plan needs to represents the views and aspirations of Shoreham Beach residents. If the majority of voters in Marine Ward approve the plan, then it becomes part of the Local Plan and can influence future planning applications and help shape where we live and/or work. Articulating the Vision: Shoreham Beach will maintain and enhance its eclectic character through a balance between innovative architecture, neighbourly development, and the conservation of heritage and natural habitat. The NP will meet the needs of residents, local businesses, visitors, flora and fauna, ensuring that the neighbourhood thrives as a place to live, work and enjoy a range of community and leisure activities. Shoreham Beach will be a quiet, low emission neighbourhood with the flexibility to welcome and accommodate visitors during peak seasons. The flow of people on and off the beach will be safe and smooth. Young and old can choose to travel locally without relying on the car. It will be easy to choose active transport to maintain a healthy lifestyle during our daily commute - helping us to be more able in later life. • How Community Groups Can Improve Public Space

All over the country, community groups are becoming involved in improving outdoor spaces. This Design Council guide aims to help anyone involved in a public space project for the first time. It gives examples of great outdoor spaces led by community groups and highlights lessons from their experiences. It is neither a substitute for the need to employ an experienced design professional; nor does it provide a comprehensive guide to involving and consulting people. It seeks to inspire people to demand better places and in doing so challenges users of this guide to think carefully about leaving a legacy of excellence in the projects that emerge. How could this be applied to Shoreham Beach Neighbourhood Plan Draft Policies? For instance, the "Beach Green Renaissance" In the context of the designation of Beach Green as a Local Public Open Space and a Village Green, the Neighbourhood Plan is proposing to promote and support the following initiatives: the provision of a multi-use activities area in the northern part of Beach Green the retention and improvement of the (whole or part of) car park the provision of a café and community facilities on the site of the existing toilet block bike parking and improved cycle and pedestrian path with curves to slow cyclists near the toilets and cafe visitor map and fitness loops (unobtrusive signage on existing pathways to mark routes designed for enjoyable, car-free running and walking trails around the neighbourhood) the preparation of a Beach Green Master Plan to ensure the co-ordinated and integrated implementation of these proposals. • Safe public Wi-Fi for kids on Shoreham Beach?

"Shoreham Beach will strive to be a safe public wi-fi zone” Would you support this objective? Through the Neighbourhood Plan, there is an opportunity for Shoreham Beach to become a safe place for kids to browse the internet. This could be achieved through a new Public WiFi safety initiative. Friendly Wi-fi is the world’s first standard in public Wi-Fi safety - a government initiated certification scheme to shield young people from pornography, images and videos of child sexual abuse. How would it be implemented in public places? Public places can display the 'Friendly WiFi symbol' to show their customers that their public WiFi is properly filtered. On the beach there are few places but it would soon spread to the local retailers, cafes, pubs, gyms, B&Bs, libraries, hotels, etc. It is good for business because it shows customers that you are a leader in the quest and journey to keep children and young people safe online. SBNF have been gathering the support of local schools and young people via the survey for young people. Getting certified is easy. The cost to business is currently £27.91/yr. www.friendlywifi.com Could this be a policy? "New developments with public Wi-Fi will be required to join the Friendly WiFi scheme. Existing businesses will pledge to join the scheme." "Internet Safety in the Public Realm" could be a supplementary policy in Part 2 of the Neighbourhood Plan. This section is envisaged as an advocacy document which can be used by Forum, SBRA, other neighbourhood organisations and ward councillors when they are proposing, supporting or objecting to actions by public or private organisations on the Beach. What do you think? Would you support this policy? Please comment below or send us an email or join the community facilities group. Why it is necessary At least 65% of 12-15 yr olds have smartphones. Rising to 80% of 15 yr olds. They often use public wi-fi hotspots to get online, potentially accessing harmful content. Young people tend to share connections, so even if you think you have blocked this kind of content from your child’s phone, they could still access it via their friends. Anecdotal evidence Child psychiatrists and psychotherapists are reporting “an explosion in numbers in mental health problems amongst youngsters…. they can now access the internet without adult supervision in parks, on street, wherever they are, and then they can go anywhere. So there are difficult chat rooms, self-harming websites, anorexia websites, pornography, and a whole invisible world of dark places. In real life, we travel with our children. When they are connected via their smartphone to the web, they usually travel alone”. Statistics 87% of 13-16 yr olds have deleted the record of which sites they’ve visited. 47% of 9-12 yr old smartphone users know how to change privacy settings on a social networking profile. 62% of parents of 12-15 yr olds feel they know less about the internet and social media than their children. Domestic Hotspots Home routers are also increasingly being used to broadcast a public Wi-Fi signal. It is estimated that at least 1 in 3 home broadband routers are used as WiFi hotspots, for example, BT-FON and Virgin's app-based service. Access via these apps is subject to the same same parental controls and filters that would apply in the user's own home.... but that may not always be the case with other providers. Could there be some kind of 'citizen's pledge' to ensure domestic hotspots are also filtered? What do you think? Would you support this objective? Take the survey for young people / comment below or send us an email. If you would like to get more involved - join the community facilities group. #privacy #school #safety #survey

  • AGM postponed - new date to be arranged

We are delighted to announce that Dawn Clenton-Sparey will take back the post of Chairman with immediate effect. Dawn needed to step away from the role to deal with some personal issues and she is now ready to return. Given that we no longer need to appoint a new Chairperson, and following external advice from Locality*, it has been decided to cancel the AGM which was due to take place on 16th May 2017. A new AGM will be called at a future date. This will allow for some governance issues to be addressed, and enable the management committee to update Dawn on our progress. • Beach Green Community Cafe developer chosen

ADC has announced that a deal has been agreed in principle with a team which includes those behind the Boxpark redevelopments in Shoreditch and Croydon as well as Fatboy Slim's Big Beach Cafe in Hove Lagoon. More images in our Community Hub folder on Facebook The emphasis for the Big Beach Box will be on creating a new community cafe which could also include a roof terrace, changing rooms, and a centre for watersports. Below is an excerpt from the planning brief which the forum submitted to the council. We look forward to finding out more about how they intend to address these requirements. Community Requirements Overall, our community engagement work has provided clear evidence that local residents need and want more than just a public toilet incorporated in the café building. There is substantial support for a community hub with the following elements: Cafe cater for a range of residents (particularly young and elderly people) reasonably priced healthy eating options not too loud (both sound and visually) family-friendly wifi filter ability for parents to watch over children playing on the green nice to have: high enough to provide views of the sea and The Downs, if it can be designed in a sensitive way that is in proportion and not overbearing any products sold via a kiosk should be sensitive to the local environment, i.e. biodegradable packaging. refuse and recycling bins must be seagull-resistant and conveniently placed to minimise the impact on the local nature reserve and marine environment. The provision of facilities to accommodate additional toilets for events Showers, lockers and changing rooms encourage staff to cycle instead of drive encourage watersport enthusiast to use these facilities instead of needing a van parked on the side of the road Flexible meeting space for community groups an area with removable partitions, integrated into the cafe operations as much as possible - not just a separate locked room, not used as a storage or junk room. Storage facilities and booking system for Multi-Use-Games-Area. Sustainable building design aim to achieve the maximum feasible generation of renewable energy and the highest possible levels of energy and water efficiency and waste management. Transport improved pedestrian and cycle lane and secure cycle-parking to minimise traffic to the venue. assessment of public transport impacts and provision for pick-up drop-off area for taxis etc. pedestrian crossing improvements from the north side of Beach Green (parking & playground area).
